FAQs
Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), sometimes known as ‘tapping’ or ‘acupuncture without needles’, is a gentle mind-body technique. It is a simple self-care tool that combines focusing our attention while tapping or rubbing on a series of points on the hands, face and upper body.
These points correspond broadly to those used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), lying along ‘meridian pathways’, through which energy, (known as qi in TCM) is traditionally believed to flow.
During EFT, we focus on a particular thought, emotion, physical sensation or situation while gently tapping or rubbing these points. EFT is thought to help restore balance to the body’s energy system, regulate emotional processing, and activate the body’s natural calming responses.
EFT is intended as a complementary self-care tool, and importantly does not replace medical, psychological or other supportive care. Its value within the cancer setting is in providing an additional practical means of supporting emotional wellbeing.
During each session, Janey will guide you step-by-step through a series of gentle techniques, either tapping or rubbing the points. You will be invited to bring your attention to thoughts, emotions or physical sensations in a safe and supportive way.
You can participate as much or as little, as feels comfortable for you. There is no expectation to talk, or to share with the group, and you are welcome to keep your camera on or off throughout the session.
Yes. You are very welcome to attend a single session and see whether EFT feels helpful for you. Some people benefit from just one session, while others choose to attend regularly to practice in a supported group environment, build confidence in using the technique, and support their ongoing wellbeing.
There is no commitment to attend every week.
Find somewhere quiet, where you can relax for approximately 30 minutes. You may want a blanket and cushion to support your comfort, and some water. You are welcome to have some gentle music in the background, as all microphones will be muted until the end of the session.
This is an opportunity for some time-out. If possible, switch off notifications on your phone, tablet, or computer to minimise distractions. You can choose whether to have your camera on or off during the session.
There will be an opportunity at the end of every session to ask any questions that may arise.
EFT is generally considered a gentle, low-risk technique when practiced appropriately. EFT often focuses on areas of concern, so participants are encouraged to work at their own pace and only focus on material they feel comfortable exploring.
You can pause or stop at any time, and do not need to share anything personal within the group.
