Scar Care – A three-session series offering a guide to scars and how to manage them through self-care – with Janey Barrett Scar Care practitioner and Wellbeing Lead in the Penny Brohn UK wellbeing team and Kate Oldham, Scar Care practitioner and Cancer Rehab specialist.
These sessions will empower you to care for your scars physically and help build confidence about how to move forward from treatment. They will help you to understand how to work with your scars and offer tools to help support the emotions surrounding both the scars and treatment. All the information provided is relevant whether you are preparing for, or recovering from surgery.
Janey Barrett - Wellbeing Lead

Janey has been a Complementary Therapist for over 25 years with a wide range of specialist training, including Scar Therapy, a holistic approach to scar management.
Janey will guide you through simple ways to manage your scars, with a specific focus on the emotional impact of scars on week 3.
Kate Oldham - Cancer rehabilitation therapist
Kate has been a Cancer Rehab specialist for over 10 years. During this time, she has expanded her qualifications by training in therapies to support anybody with a long-term condition or short term illness. Training in centers such as the Royal Marsden and Velindre Hospital. Her specialisms are lymphoedema and scarwork. Kate likes to support her clients with not only hands on therapy but through self-management techniques building confidence for clients to support themselves.

Scar Care is a monthly online group space to learn practical tools and information to help look after and care for your scars, as well as an opportunity to understand more about the emotional impact of scars and how they may be affecting you. It’s a group space to learn from the facilitators, as well as share tools and information with other participants.
Scar Care will help you to feel informed and empowered in caring for your scars, both old and new.
Knowing how to care for your scars can help to reduce sensitivity and pain, using movement and self-massage techniques.
Alongside the more practical physical benefits, Scar Care is also aimed at helping you to manage the emotional impact of scars.
The sessions also offer the support of a group environment.
Scar Care is suitable for anyone who has been through or is preparing for treatment that may cause scar-tissue, such as surgery, radiotherapy as well as pic-lines or ports. that an old or new scar. It is also suitable for anyone who may be about to go through treatment and would like to feel informed and prepared.
Scar Care sessions are held monthly, and follow a 3-month format:
Session 1: What are scars? An introduction to the physiology of scars, and an overview of the impact of scars, both physical and emotional.
Session 2: Physical self-care – t Scar issue, whether visual or hidden s can affect how the body moves and feels. This session includes self-care massage and movement techniques and is beneficial even for scars that are many years old.
Session 3: Emotional self-care – from diagnosis through to the after-effects of treatment. This is an opportunity to heal the emotional connection to our scars, old or new.

Janey Barrett - Wellbeing Lead

Janey has been a Complementary Therapist for over 25 years, and is qualified as an Advanced Clinical Hypnotherapist.
Janey uses various relaxation techniques to help you reach a lovely deep level of calm, and will then gently guide you through suggestions, exploring ways to help support you. Each session is themed, aimed at helping with issues related to Cancer and Cancer treatment. Janey will also be offering self-care techniques, so that you can continue to practice between sessions.
A note from Janey – ‘We all have the answer within. Sometimes these answers get buried under layers; layers of experiences, thoughts, memories etc… Hypnotherapy helps to peel back these layers. People often claim to feel ‘lighter’ and ‘unburdened’ after Hypnotherapy. These sessions are aimed at helping you to feel calm, relaxed and more prepared.’
