Childcare bursaries available

The Penny Brohn UK Nicola Corry Support Fund gives financial assistance for parents to attend services and support at Penny Brohn UK. Specifically, the fund supports one or both parents of a child under the age of 16 years old, where one or both have themselves had a diagnosis of cancer within the last 3 years. We can offer childcare and travel bursaries. If you would like to access this support, please email clientsupport@pennybrohn.org.uk.

Costs and contribution

As a charity, we want to ensure that anyone who needs our support can use our services, whatever their situation. That’s why all our services are free of charge for any adult with cancer in the UK. However, it costs us an average £144 per person to offer these special Cancer Support Days, so when you book your place, we will ask for a donation which could support our vital services including Cancer Support Days.

The suggested donation is £45 per person (excluding accommodation). We understand that times are tough right now, and if you can’t afford this, please don’t worry, any contribution is appreciated, and if you can’t donate anything, we completely understand. Any contribution you can make will help us continue to offer this valuable support. Please note, we are unable to refund donations, but are happy to transfer your place to another Cancer Support Day, if there is space.

Mind Matters Cancer Support Day

The Mind Matters Cancer Support Day is designed to give you helpful tools and strategies to improve your mental and emotional health.

During the event, you can join expert-led sessions that focus on:

  • Good Mood Food: Learn about the link between what we eat and how we feel. This session will explain how certain foods can help improve your mood and support better mental and emotional health.
  • Movement as Medicine: This session will show you how physical activity can help build mental strength and confidence.
  • Cancer Language: In this session, you’ll learn about the power of words when talking about cancer. Explore how the language we use affects our emotions and relationships.
  • Nervous System Reset: Learn how understanding your nervous system can help you handle stress, anxiety, and emotional overwhelm. This session will teach simple, practical tools to help you manage these feelings in daily life.

The day starts with a welcome cuppa at 9.45am and finishes at 4.15pm, but you are welcome to enjoy the house and gardens after. A delicious lunch and snacks are included.

This Cancer Support Day particularly focuses on our Mind and Emotions pillar of work.

FAQs

Penny Brohn UK Cancer Support Days are for anyone who has had a cancer diagnosis in the last five years, and/or their supporter.

Please note, that while the day will still be informative and beneficial if you are a supporter, they are designed for those with a cancer diagnosis in mind.

Some activities are in the Penny Brohn UK gardens so please bring weather appropriate clothes.

We offer a snack in the morning and lunch but please bring further food and drinks if you think you might need it. Further information about facilities at our center along with recommended items to bring with you will be sent to you before joining the Cancer Support Day.

Please bring with you anything you may need to be comfortable for the day including medication.

Our staff will be trained in first aid, but they will not be able to provide any form of medical treatment, dispense medications or help with personal care. They will be able to assist you to get urgent medical support if needed.

Please aim to arrive by 9.30am at the Penny Brohn UK centre, this will give you time to have a cup of tea and settle with the rest of the group before we begin.

Please let us know any extra needs or requirements you may have so we can ensure you are as comfortable as possible.

We ask you to join for the whole day of programmed activities to avoid disruption to the group. If you do need to leave early, please let a member of staff know, ideally in advance or on the day.

When completing your Personal Information form you will be asked about any additional needs you may have, including for example any hearing, vision, mobility needs; or other support requirements that would help make your experience more comfortable. Where possible we will seek to accommodate any additional needs required. If you would like to talk to someone more specifically about your needs, please contact our client support team.

Absolutely! If you haven’t already, we recommend joining one of our ‘Welcome to Penny Brohn UK’ online sessions on Tuesdays at 10am to help you understand more about our services and support. Click here to find out more and book your place.

You are very welcome to join each wellbeing day theme if you would like, but we ask you not to join the same theme more than once.

We want anyone living with cancer to be able to access our services, whatever their circumstances and we understand that you may not be able to make a donation right now.

When you complete the form you will see an option to make a donation for the suggested amount, another amount that is comfortable for you, or you can choose not to donate at this time.

We know things come up and you may have to change your plans, if that happens just let us know and we will do our best to offer you a place on another Cancer Support Day and transfer your donation.

Unfortunately, it is unlikely that we can refund your donation, like all charities, we must follow charity law and can only refund donations in exceptional circumstances, as per The Charities Act 2011. If you believe your donation should be refunded, please let us know and we will be able to advise you.

We know that you may have to think about other costs to attend a Cancer Support Day, like travel or childcare, and we may be able to help with some of these costs. Our client support team (clientsupport@pennybrohn.org.uk) can give you more information on what is available and how to request it.
