Penny Brohn UK celebrates Volunteers’ Week 2023

This week (1st – 7th June) marks Volunteers’ Week, the annual celebration of the contribution of millions of individuals around the UK who give up their time to support local charities and give back to their community.

Here at Penny Brohn UK we have a close-knit group of volunteers who truly keep the cogs ticking. With volunteers scoping across the whole of the charity, not only helping us out at events, but also within the very heart of the organisation, including;

  • Data and systems support
  • Fundraising & Marketing
  • Garden Team
  • Health and Safety
  • Hospitality
  • The Hub, Penny Brohn UK Shop
  • HR
  • Reception
  • Research and Evaluation
  • Services

This year, we wanted to mark Volunteers’ Week at Penny Brohn UK by sharing some words of gratitude from just some of the teams where our volunteers make a real impact on the lives of those individuals living with cancer.

Research & Evaluation

We have had wonderful support from volunteers over the years in the Research & Evaluation team. We currently have two regular volunteers who enter evaluation data and coordinate our Client Voice group – both of these roles are crucial in helping us make sure we are listening to the voices of the people who use our services. We are so grateful for the time given, and the enthusiasm, knowledge and skills shown by the amazing people who have volunteered in our team.– Rachel Johnson, Evaluation Lead

The Hub, Penny Brohn UK Shop

We have been incredibly lucky to build such a dedicated little team here at the Penny Brohn UK Hub, we would be absolutely lost without our volunteers!

Some of our volunteers joined us before we opened back in 2020, and were here helping behind the scenes long before we’d had a single customer through the door! Since then, our team has steadily grown and we have a wonderful group of all ages from across Bristol who give up between an hour to a whole day each week to help us run our shop smoothly and to a standard we are all very proud of.

Our volunteers are a huge part of what we do, supporting our staff to manage the workload and bringing a wealth of knowledge, experience and creativity to the space.

As well as serving customers and preparing stock for the shopfloor we have volunteers that mend items of clothing, model things for us to sell online and beautifully style our mannequins, we’re even lucky enough to have a handful of volunteers who collect donations from people in the local area unable to get things to us themselves.

We all look forward to seeing each other and value each others company, sharing ideas and always thinking of ways we can improve things and raise more money for Penny Brohn UK.

We’ll be thanking our volunteers personally this week but to anyone who has given their time over the past 3 years we’ve been trading we’d like to say a huge thank you for your support from all of us at The Hub!– Louise Minchin, The Penny Brohn UK Hub & Online Shop

HR

Pam has been volunteering with the charity for many years and continues to be an important member of the Penny Brohn UK team.  Utilising her administration skills, she turns her hand to two volunteering roles with the charity which is very much appreciated, and we are so very grateful for the time that she gives. – Helen Wake, HR Advisor

Fundraising

I wanted to say a massive thank you to each and every one of our wonderful volunteers who give us their time, skills and experience with so much love and dedication.

From marshalling our events, helping in the fundraising office, making cakes to volunteering at our open Garden Day. We could go on and on about all of the amazing things volunteers do to support us!

It is your truly amazing support which enables us to continue our work and be there for people with cancer.

Thank you, we truly couldn’t do it without you!– Helen Isbell, Community Fundraising Manager

Marketing

Our small marketing team has benefitted hugely from the support of our regular volunteer. She helps us by speaking with people who have used our services, so that we can share their experiences and hopefully inspire other people to get in touch with Penny Brohn UK. We are so thankful to all the volunteers that have such a transformational impact on our work!– Beth, Head of Brand, Marketing and Influencing

A huge thank you on behalf of everyone here at Penny Brohn UK to the hundreds of individuals who have chosen to pledge their time over the last 40 years. We truly can’t thank you enough, and look forward to seeing what the next 40 years will bring!
